Two lanes of San Mateo Bridge closed overnight

Two lanes on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge will be closed from 7 p.m. Monday night to 5 a.m. Tuesday morning for additional roadwork, Caltrans officials announced Monday. The closure will allow work crews to apply anti-corrosive paint to a recently repaired steel beam and complete some other maintenance work, Caltrans spokesman Bob Haus said. Steel beams on a bridge should not rip open after less than a decade — and the one that did that on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge raises grave concerns from an engineering expert that a retrofit project was seriously flawed. An engineer who performed an analysis of the bridge prior to the 2001 retrofit said the failure was likely caused by one of two things: either a major design flaw in the earthquake retrofit project or that the materials used for the bridge were defective. San Mateo Bridge lane closed for emergency repairs

Inspectors have discovered a 10-inch crack in a wishbone-shaped steel beam in the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. Despite the crack, Caltrans expected the bridge would remain open, with just the bridge’s northernmost lane – the lane immediately over the crack – closed as of Wednesday night.
