Joe Paterno, who racked up more wins than anyone else in major college football but was fired from Penn State amid a child sex abuse scandal has died. He was 85.
His family released a statement Sunday morning to announce his death.
Paterno's son Scott announced Nov. 18 that his father was being treated for lung cancer, which was diagnosed in mid-November during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness.

After hanging half a hundred points on their crosstown rivals, Matt Barkley and his Southern California teammates returned to the Coliseum locker room to find T-shirts on their chairs proclaiming the Trojans to be the Pac-12 South champions.
Sanctions will keep USC out of the conference title game. These resilient Trojans still believed they proved which team should be on a flight from Los Angeles to Eugene, Ore., next week.

Syracuse assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine says allegations that he molested two former ball boys for years are "patently false."
The school placed Fine on administrative leave Thursday "in light of the new allegations" and an investigation by the Syracuse City Police.

The Oklahoma State University women's basketball coach and his assistant were killed when the single-engine plane transporting them on a recruiting trip crashed in steep terrain in Arkansas, the university said Friday.
Kurt Budke and Miranda Serna died in the accident Thursday afternoon in the Winona Wildlife Management Area near Perryville, about 45 miles west of Little Rock.
