The Office of Small Business ain’t TurboTax

In November 2007, voters passed Proposition I, creating the Office of Small Business and directing it to issue, by April 2008, a report that recommended possible streamlining and consolidation of regulatory functions supervised by that agency. The idea was to make life easier for The City’s often-beleaguered small business. Read More

Despite all the vitriol and bad feelings that came out of Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi’s protracted domestic violence scandal, victims in San Francisco might ultimately have that sad saga to thank for increased funding toward enforcement and services. Read More

Muni's Central Subway tunneling decision may not make North Beach happy

Muni’s list of preferred alternatives for removing its Central Subway tunnel-boring machines in North Beach doesn’t include an option popular with the community and could result in the agency resorting to a method strongly opposed by many locals. Read More

SFMTA considering different options for Central Subway work in North Beach

Muni is exploring new options for retrieving tunneling equipment in or near North Beach, including one that could save the agency $23 million while keeping the machinery underground indefinitely. Replacing Ting could affect composition of Board of Supervisors

Assessor-Recorder Phil Ting’s election to the California Assembly has set into motion a possible series of personnel changes that could result in the appointment of a new San Francisco supervisor and affect who becomes the next board president. Ting bested Michael Breyer on Tuesday to capture the Assembly seat representing western San Francisco and parts of northern San Mateo County. After Ting is sworn in Dec. 3, it will be up to Mayor Ed Lee to appoint his replacement. Read More

Will the fun return to San Francisco politics?

When I first began writing about local politics, the Board of Supervisors was depressingly funny. There was former (and current) comedian Tom Ammiano, wry Aaron Peskin, “supervisor straitjacket” Chris Daly and the lovable, poetry-quoting Jake McGoldrick. But that was then. The class of 2010 has been relatively calm and grown-up, enjoying a decent working relationship with each other and with Mayor Ed Lee. Read More

Nudists, Nazis and Normalization at a City Hall special meeting

At an aptly titled “special meeting” of the City Operations and Neighborhood Services committee last Friday, supervisors Sean Elsbernd, Carmen Chu and Scott Wiener heard public comments on Wiener’s proposed ban on public nudity, except for specific events. It was bound to be entertaining. Read More
