Mission branch library promotes sustainable urban gardening

The Mission Branch of the San Francisco Public Library on Friday will open the library's first "teaching garden" on sustainable urban food growing. The project was developed in response to Mayor Gavin Newsom's initiatives on healthy food awareness and his promoting the possibility of growing food on unused city land, according to the library. Suspect in custody for early morning stabbing

San Francisco police this morning are investigating a stabbing in The City's Mission District.     Officers were dispatched to 22nd and Bartlett streets at around 1 a.m. to a report of a stabbing, police said.     One man was found wounded and taken to San Francisco General Hospital. Second teen charged in beating of local actor on bus

A second teenager charged in the assault and robbery of the 18-year-old actor Christopher Borgzinner on a Muni bus pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday in San Francisco Superior Court. Fagamalama Pasene, 16, who is being charged as an adult, was arrested with two other teens last week in connection with the assault on Borgzinner on a Muni bus Oct. 5. Read More

Police shoot armed, mentally ill man in Mission District

Police shot and wounded a 27-year-old man Sunday evening in the Mission District after failing to subdue him with pepper spray and a round from a non-lethal projectile weapon.   The unidentified man, who was armed with a knife, is expected to survive, police said Monday.   Read More

Tall buildings could rise on Mission Street

New buildings on Mission Street could be more than 50 percent taller than the buildings they replace, under a zoning proposal due to be discussed at a public meeting Tuesday evening. Height limits along the corridor, between 16th and Cesar Chavez streets, could be increased from 55 feet or 65 feet up to 85 feet under one of several scenarios being considered by the Planning Department. Peace march tonight in response to recent slayings

A candlelight peace march is being held Sunday evening in the Mission district following a wave of violence that has alarmed residents and prompted increased police presence. Participants plan to gather at 6:30 p.m. at 24th Street and Treat Avenue.
