The Sacred Heart Cathedral boys’ basketball team sleepwalked through the first half against rival St. Ignatius on Tuesday and still took a seven-point lead into the break. Then the Big Two woke up. Standout senior forwards Taylor Johns and Joshua Fox scored 14 of Sacred Heart’s 16 points in the third quarter and the Wildcats never challenged again in a 57-45 Irish win in the first round of the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs. With the regular season out the way and six teams having already qualified for the Central Coast Section playoffs, the West Catholic Athletic League tournament, which begins today, will be for bragging rights, but one school seeks to right a wrong. For the first time this season, the Sacred Heart Cathedral boys’ basketball team looked rattled on the road against Riordan. Sacred Heart missed 15 free throws, had 21 turnovers and the Crusaders held standout forwards Taylor Johns and Joshua Fox to a combined 15 points, but the Irish had just enough to outlast Riordan in a 50-41 West Catholic Athletic League win. It’s no mystery that the Sacred Heart Cathedral boys’ basketball team has one of the best frontcourts in the Bay Area, but when the Irish guards played like they did on Monday against city rival St. Ignatius — look out. Led by 15 points from senior shooting guard Tyler Petroni, the Sacred Heart guards shot the lights out from 3-point range, shooting 47 percent from distance to push the Irish to a 68-46 rout of the visiting Wildcats in West Catholic Athletic League play. San Francisco school closes due to outbreak of stomach flu

An outbreak of the stomach flu prompted the closure of a private high school in the Sunset district Wednesday for deep cleaning of the campus.St. Ignatius College Preparatory School officials announced the closure after an estimated 50 students called in sick Tuesday and another 90 kids were sent home from school, according to a letter from Principal Patrick Ruff that was posted on the school’s website. After both teams had to wait an extra day to tangle due to the soggy conditions at Kezar Stadium, the Sacred Heart Cathedral High School boys’ soccer team outlasted St. Ignatius 2-1 in an exciting West Catholic Athletic League contest at Crocker Amazon on Wednesday. Sacred Heart Cathedral tops Serra in WCAL opener

The Sacred Heart Cathedral boys’ basketball team remained undefeated Tuesday night, defeating Serra High School 67-56 in the West Catholic Athletic League opener for both teams. Irish senior Taylor Johns led the way with 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, helping Sacred Heart Cathedral improve to 10-0 on the season.
