It Gets Better advocate asks San Francisco 49ers to make video

Sean Chapin
Sean Chapin, the man who asked the San Francisco Giants to make an It Gets Better video, is now petitioning the 49ers to become the first NFL team to make one. Chapin, a self-proclaimed Niners fan, posted a letter to the team at www.change.org/petitions/49ers-please-make-an-it-gets-better-video. The It Gets Better project aims to curb youth bullying, especially against LGBT kids. Read More

The San Francisco 49ers are starting work at the new Santa Clara stadium site. The team announced Thursday that preliminary construction for the new stadium could begin this spring. Projects would include utility relocation, bridge construction and a new pump station. A $1 billion, 68,500-seat stadium is planned for Santa Clara, near the Great America Amusement Park. Read More

San Francisco 49ers are legitimate once again

Alex Smith
It is impossible to overstate the importance of the 49ers’ comeback win in Philadelphia on Sunday. For the first time in years, the Niners beat a good team on the road and, most important, they finished the game when they had the lead. They couldn’t do that against the Dallas Cowboys in the second game of the season. They had the Cowboys on the ropes with a 10-point lead and just 11 minutes left, but they let the Cowboys wriggle off the hook to tie the game and win in overtime. Read More

San Francisco's baseball fans ready for some football

Giants fans moving on
Perhaps it was fitting that Opera in the Park took over the friendly confines of Third and King on Sunday — the fat lady was singing in Arizona the night before as the Giants’ once-promising season came to an official end. There will be no NL West title, no wild-card berth, no ticker tape and no mosh pits on the pitcher’s mound. And for many fans, it’s just time to move on. Read More

Three arrested in Candlestick parking lot brawl after 49ers game

Candlestick Park brawl
A vicious parking lot brawl at Candlestick Park that injured three people, including a security guard, led to a trio of arrests and the seizure of a Colt pistol on Sunday, police at Bayview Station said Monday. San Francisco cops working security at the San Francisco 49ers game found one of the victims bleeding from the head in the parking lot around 5 p.m., shortly after the home team lost to the Dallas Cowboys 27-24 in overtime. Great America Park sold to group that includes San Francisco 49ers

The owners of the Great America theme park announced Monday that the park is being sold for $70 million to a San Francisco real estate firm in a deal that will resolve a lawsuit filed two years ago by the park's operators against the city of Santa Clara. The York family, who own the San Francisco 49ers, is contributing to the purchase, but just how much they are investing has yet to be disclosed, according to Santa Clara Mayor Jamie Matthews. 49ers' Jim Harbaugh already mastering coachspeak

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh
Jim Harbaugh is as much a football coach as a psychologist is a pixie. His words are measured, his thoughts unlimited. There’s a reason for every comment, just as there is for every play call. Wednesday at 49ers Central in Santa Clara — and via phone hookup — Jason Garrett of the Dallas Cowboys, who play the Niners on Sunday at Candlestick Park, said what one coach always says about another: That Harbaugh is brilliant. Conservative working for 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh so far

Jim Harbaugh
The NFL is back with a bang, which of course means it’s open season on coaches, quarterbacks and victories that don’t pass the beauty test. Jim Harbaugh is already on the defensive about claims his play-calling was too conservative in Sunday’s win against the Seattle Seahawks. This after Harbaugh himself said the 49ers went into a “blue-collar” mode after building a 16-0 halftime lead. “We’re attacking and I think we’re playing to win, that’s what I live by,” he said. Tailgate parties at Candlestick Park cut short

When Devinder Dhesi and his family left their Yuba City home Sunday morning to attend the 49ers’ home opener at Candlestick Park, they didn’t expect their fun to be cut short. But the recent violence at Candlestick Park football games — including the Aug. 20 shooting of two men following the 49ers’ victory over the Raiders — prompted the 49ers to stop all tailgating 15 minutes before kickoff. Sept. 11 anniversary leads to beefed up security in San Francisco

BART
Transit riders and ballpark fans may see additional security this weekend for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Officials say there have been no specific threats in San Francisco, where several public events commemorating 9/11 are planned, including at the Civic Center on Saturday, and Sunday afternoon at the 49ers Opening Day game, the Giants-Dodgers game and Opera in the Park in Golden Gate Park.
