Ross Mirkarimi recall effort fizzles as supporters delay meeting item

A possible recall effort against Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi appears to be losing steam — at least for now. Anger over the Board of Supervisors’ decision in October to reinstate the embattled sheriff, following his suspension in the wake of a domestic violence case involving his wife, led to calls for a voter-driven ouster that had appeared imminent to some. Spending on local ballot measures soared in 2012 election

The rush of money into city political campaigns was not just limited to candidates. Campaigns for several San Francisco ballot measures had price tags in the neighborhood of $1 million. Based on recent filings with the Ethics Commission, the largest spending on ballot measures was for the $195 million parks bond and on the measure to replace San Francisco’s business payroll tax with a tax on gross receipts. Both campaign war chests were about $1 million. Read More

Record-setting spending by challenger in District 1 didn’t out Mar

No contest saw a greater rush of money into San Francisco politics this year than the race for the District 1 Board of Supervisors seat. But results from that election suggest that money’s impact on local politics may not be as clear-cut as some imagine. The way that triumphant Supervisor Eric Mar and his backers tell it, it was financial power versus people power — and the people triumphed decisively. Read More

Backlash for board backing for Mirkarimi

Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi may be hoping for a smooth transition back into his job, and supervisorial candidate Julian Davis may hope the claims that he groped a woman will blow over. But there are machinations behind the scenes that are just getting started. Also in the crosshairs? Supervisors say property lease a bad deal for SFMTA

Questions are flying about the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s costly proposed lease of a 13-acre site for auto towing. Curious timing and questionable terms and costs surrounding a proposed 20-year contract between the agency and the real estate firm Prologis prompted the Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee on Wednesday to put the brakes on the deal, which took 14 months to negotiate. Mirkarimi groping for distractions

The plastic bag surcharge is in effect in just about every store in The City — and, for better or worse, we all have suspended Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi to thank. Back when he was on the Board of Supervisors, plastic bags, PG&E and brevity were his enemies, although he only pushed through a law banning one of them. As of Oct. 1, stores must charge a dime for any bag they have to provide to customers. Read More

Rallying the Mirkaloonies

Over the past two weeks, suspended Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi has been distributing a flier to his supporters. On it is a series of bulleted sentiments, or “Points to convey in letters to the editor, supervisors and on-line media sites. Ideas to get started: choose, combine, re-phrase, embellish.” Read More
