Trust fund promise goes back to 1968

Lately there has been controversy about the Muni operators’ trust fund payout. The prevailing view seems to be that it was wrong to pay us that money in today’s economic climate. Read More

Pre-emptive strike is needed against Iran

Iran has again proven itself a dangerous, rogue nation. The recent foiled assassination plot is one more link in a chain of radical Iranian behavior spanning decades. Read More

Express bus is best way to get to Candlestick

After reading your Sunday article about the 49ers game-day dash race between a car and Muni, I really had to laugh. Anybody who knows anything about sports and the 49ers knows the best way to get to Candlestick Park via public transportation: You take the Muni express buses. Read More

Children should be able to walk to their schools

I was a homeowner in San Francisco since 1990 and raised my teenage son outside the public school system. I felt it was untenable to ask an 8-year-old boy to ride a bus across town in the interest of a social experiment. What happened to the old days where kids could walk to school, have friends from the neighborhood in that school and participate in after-school activities without requiring the working parent to provide shuttle service — in some cases 45 minutes away? Few people participated in latest Sunday Streets

This past weekend’s kickoff of Sunday Streets on The Embarcadero was notable for the lack of participants. Despite a break in the rainy weather, police and traffic personnel often outnumbered the few pedestrians and cyclists actually using the street. I wonder if in this era of tight city budgets whether programs such as Sunday Streets have a value or should be discontinued when they outlive their novelty and usefulness?Dave BurnettSan Francisco Read More

Caption misrepresents Alioto’s role in tax

The caption under the late Mayor Joseph L. Alioto’s photo accompanying my March 10 op-ed, “San Francisco’s anti-job payroll tax,” erroneously stated that Mayor Alioto in 1970 “imposed a city income tax upon all who resided and worked in The City.” He did not and could not do so under state law. However, the Board of Supervisors and he did in 1970 enact the payroll tax and gross receipts tax.Judge Quentin L. Kopp (Ret.)San Francisco Read More

Cops just trying to help relieve drug problems

The Henry Hotel should be shut down. Such places have proven to be havens for drug dealers and users. Instead of releasing videos of the cops doing alleged illegal searches, why doesn’t the hotel owner release videos of all the illegal acts that happen in the hallways of his hotel?I see all the violence and daily crime in this area, and I am disgusted by it. The one time I read that police are doing something to clean up Sixth Street, the officers get reprimanded for it? Read More

Neighborhood school model the right choice

The San Francisco Unified School District’s move to give proximity more weight in school assignments is a move in the right direction, but it’s not enough — San Francisco should move to a true neighborhood schools model. Read More

False claims about sheriff’s deputy firing

I am writing in response to the Sunday letter titled “Taxpayers stuck with the bill on a technicality.” The letter contains false allegations that my office was responsible for an alleged failure to serve an unnamed sheriff’s deputy a one-page notice of termination, and as a result the deputy received back pay, benefits and interest in the amount of $800,000. No such thing occurred. Read More

Caltrain cuts would be disaster for commuters

I live in Bernal Heights and commute daily to Stanford via Caltrain. I’m deeply concerned about Caltrain’s impending service cuts, such as eliminating evening service. This would have the effect of making Caltrain unusable for me. Read More
