The nursing community has set up a fund to help the families of five women who were killed in a fiery crash on the San Mateo Bridge this month as they headed to a bridal party in Foster City. The California Nurses Association and National Nurses United have established the CNA Nursing Angels Family Fund to which anyone can make a donation to benefit the families of the women who died while celebrating the marriage of Neriza Fojas, 31, of Monterey. A limousine taking nine women to a party erupted in flames, killing five of the passengers, authorities and the mother of one of the survivors said Sunday. Peninsula voters signal approval of two revenue-generating hotel tax hikes

Voters in Foster City and Redwood City approved hotel tax hikes Tuesday, a victory for the cash-hungry municipalities. Under Redwood City’s Measure I, which goes into effect in January, the tax charged to hotel guests in will rise from 10 to 12 percent. And under Measure P, Foster City’s hotel tax will increase from 8 to 9.5 percent. Both cities proposed the measures to capitalize on the growing number of visitors to San Mateo County. Read More

Two Peninsula cities hope to cash in on the rising number of visitors to the county by boosting the tax they charge hotel guests. If voters pass ballot measures in November, each by a simple majority, Redwood City’s transit occupancy tax would rise from 10 to 12 percent, and Foster City’s from 8 to 9.5 percent.
