University’s Lopes has instant impact in soccer victory against Drew

University High School junior midfielder Diego Lopes couldn’t get out of class in time for a 4 p.m. kickoff against Drew on Monday afternoon. Normally a starter, Lopes arrived toward the end of warm-ups and began the game as a substitute. From his sideline seat at the Crocker Amazon Soccer Fields, Lopes watched University hit the post twice and fire several more terrific close-range opportunities either wide or over goal through the first 25 minutes. Capitalizing on their only scoring opportunity of the second half, University’s Jesse Beller scored in the 65th minute to give the Red Devils a 2-1 victory over Branson School in Ross in nonleague play at the College of Marin. During the top of the first inning, it looked like Stuart Hall starter T.J. Najera was in for a long afternoon, giving up hits to three of the first four University batters. However, after spotting the Red Devils three runs, Najera tightened things up to pitch six strong innings, and the Knights rallied back to defeat the Red Devils 5-3 in the Bay Counties League West semifinals on Thursday at Skyline College.
