Coming off their bye week, it’s business as usual for the Raiders heading into their matchup this weekend against the undefeated Atlanta Falcons.
Oakland is a team that seems in constant rebuilding mode and is a decade removed from its last winning season and on its third coach, Dennis Allen, in three years.
“Obviously, we didn’t start the season out like we hoped,” said the 39-year-old Allen, the league’s youngest head coach. “We’re not where we want to be right now.”

A new defensive scheme that was supposed to transform a struggling unit has led to perhaps the least productive defense Raiders history.
The Raiders (1-3) returned to practice Monday after having four days off for their bye week looking for answers on how to fix a defense that is on pace to allow the most points and yards in a season in team history.

The biggest among the myriad problems for the Raiders during their bye week has been the absence of a running game.
Oakland ranks dead last in the NFL in rushing at 60.8 yards per game a quarter of the way through the season. It’s a huge setback, considering the Raiders were self-advertised as a team that would lean heavily on the run and had finished second in the NFL in rushing in 2010 and seventh a year ago.

Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey practiced for the first time Tuesday since being hospitalized by a helmet-to-helmet hit as the Raiders worked on fixing their problems during the bye week.
Heyward-Bey took part in individual drills as the Raiders (1-3) held their first of two practices this week before getting four days off for the bye. He ran some routes and caught some passes in his first step back.

For the Raiders, the bye is coming at just the right time.
With the Raiders reeling following a 37-6 loss to Denver on Sunday that was their most lopsided in this series in a half-century, first-year coach Dennis Allen is looking to use this week off to fix the problems that have hurt Oakland (1-3) during the first quarter of the season.

If the story lines for today’s Raiders-Broncos game have a different feel from those Peyton Manning has read about for all these years — well, he’s probably not alone.
When the Denver quarterback lines up against Oakland for his first up-close taste of one of the NFL’s most intense rivalries, it will be the guys in orange playing the role of the bad guys, with the Raiders coming in wearing silver and black, as always, but looking downright docile compared to years past.

Brandon Myers may be getting most of the looks, but the Raiders tight end believes there’s strength in numbers that go beyond his passing stats.
Myers and second-year players David Ausberry and Richard Gordon have been a productive trio for quarterback Carson Palmer as the Raiders prepare to face the Broncos in Denver.
The lion’s share of the work has gone to Myers, who is tied for fifth among NFL tight ends in receptions (15) and is second to Tony Gonzalez (205) in yards.

Defensive end Andre Carter was signed by the Raiders, who also added wide receiver Tori Gurley to their practice squad.
Carter was a first-round pick by the 49ers in 2001 and has 76 sacks in 163 career games. He was with the Patriots in 2011, registering four sacks at the New York Jets on Nov. 13 and had 10 for the season when he was placed on injured reserve with a leg injury on Dec. 20. He was forced to sit out the team’s playoff run.

Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey was released from Eden Medical Center on Monday with a concussion and a neck strain after absorbing a helmet-to-helmet hit in the end zone from Pittsburgh defensive back Ryan Mundy.
After Heyward-Bey was hit, he then fell to the ground, essentially taking a second blow to the head. He was on the ground for several minutes before being strapped to a stretcher, driven off on a cart and then being sent to the hospital.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will have a banged-up defense when they travel to Oakland to face the Raiders today, but it may not matter. Oakland, led by first-year coach Dennis Allen, is off to another ugly start. The Raiders were gashed for 263 rushing yards in a 35-13 loss to the rebuilding Miami Dolphins last week after dropping their season opener to the San Diego Chargers 22-14.
The Raiders were inexplicably bad against a below-average Dolphins’ team last week.
