Bay Area's college baseball programs are in varying states

STANFORD — Two and a half years ago, Cal’s baseball program was placed on the chopping block. The community responded by providing the funding to keep the program alive, and the team responded by making a historic run to the College World Series in 2011. While the program was saved — and will even get lights and a new scoreboard at Evans Diamond this spring — the near death of the program is not without repercussions. Read More

St. Ignatius seizes Bruce-Mahoney trophy

The St. Ignatius boys’ basketball team’s defensive strategy against rival Sacred Heart Cathedral in front of a capacity crowd at USF on Tuesday was simple. Let the Irish shoot. A special night for St. John’s coach Steve Lavin ended on a bitter note as the USF men’s basketball team knocked off the Red Storm 81-65 on the Hilltop on Tuesday night. Lavin’s father, Cap Lavin, was honored at halftime as a member of USF’s 1949 NIT championship squad. Rich camaraderie gives USF women’s team an edge on the basketball court

The USF women’s basketball team has a secret weapon. It’s one that you won’t find on the list of players or in the stat sheet though. Senior guard Mel Khlok had trouble even putting it into words in the wake of the team’s 72-40 victory in their exhibition game against Missouri Southern State on Nov. 2. Read More

USF men's basketball short on experience, but tall on talent

The USF men’s basketball team has two traits that sets it apart from last year’s squad: they’re a lot younger and a lot more athletic. The Dons have no seniors this year and just five juniors, but the new influx of size and talent has coach Rex Walters more optimistic about this team than he has been in some time. Read More
