Trio of Bay Area colleges picked for postseason baseball

Three Bay Area schools were selected Monday for the 64-team NCAA Division I college baseball tournament, including USF, which will be making its first trip to the postseason since 2006. The Dons will be part of the UCLA regional. The Bruins (33-21) are the regional’s No. 1 seed, UC Irvine (39-16) is the second seed, Fresno State (40-14) is the third seed and USF is the fourth seed. New athletic director boasts of USF’s potential

A “new era” began at USF when the school introduced Scott Sidwell as its new athletic director in front of administrators, coaches, alumni, athletes and fans Monday. “To our student-athletes, this is our time,” Sidwell said. “Our time to take you to a new level.” Sidwell is the seventh athletic director at USF since 1961, taking over for interim athletic director Gary Nelson. Former Giant Foppert inspires young pitchers

Jesse Foppert, the quintessential San Francisco baseball player, is the only ballplayer to have worn both USF and Giants jerseys. He is now teaching and inspiring young San Franciscans at the Jesse Foppert Pitching Academy. A .400 hitter his senior year at San Rafael High School, Foppert had always resisted his coaches’ pleas to become a pitcher. He just wasn’t ready to give up his turns in the batter’s box. Read More
