Patriot Act extension sails through Senate

A bill to extend the Patriot Act by four years just sailed through the Senate, 72-23 and it will  now head back to the House for final approval so that President Obama can sign it before it expires after midnight tonight. But the bill couldn't pass until Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., was allowed a vote on two amendments, both of which were overwhelmingly defeated. Read More

House to vote on renewal of Patriot Act provisions today

Three provisions of the Patriot Act set to expire at the end of the month will see a vote for their continued authorization today in the House. The provisions allow for use of roving wiretaps; access to “tangible” items that a target has (such as library records) and the ability to monitor suspected targets even if they are not affiliated with any recognized terrorist group. The bill would keep these provisions in effect through December 8, 2011. Read More

Tucson shooter obsessed with bizarre Internet movie

By all accounts, an Internet documentary named "Zeitgeist" was the favorite movie of accused Tucson shooter Jared Loughner. Created in 2007 by New York-based conspiracy merchant Peter Joseph, "Zeitgeist" is a two-hour mash-up of old and new conspiracy theories involving religion, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and the Federal Reserve system.
