President Barack Obama

Profound delusions plague federal debt talks on both sides

Team Obama’s debt-limit negotiating position is fueled by a core myth and a spectacular oversight. Correcting these deficiencies would help Democrats and Republicans drain America’s Olympic pool of red ink without drowning the economy in tax hikes. Read More

More red tape coming with 4,257 new regulations

Job creation is slowing, unemployment is high. Reasonable people might believe that President Barack Obama would do all that he can to help employers create jobs. But his Spring Regulatory Agency, released in July and available at www.reginfo.gov, would hobble employers with additional costly regulations. The contents of the Spring Regulatory Agenda are even more extraordinary in light of Obama’s stated pursuit of regulatory simplicity and reform. Read More

Plan B gives president too much debt power

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is now the man in the hot seat. Outraged critics on the right condemn his Plan B proposal to end the stalemated debt-ceiling negotiations with President Barack Obama. Critics on the left hail it as a dagger aimed at the heart of limited government. Some on the right wasted no time in branding Plan B a “sellout” that undercuts and isolates House Republicans, and McConnell as a Pontius Pilate. Read More

Obama should help workers, not union bosses

For decades, unions have perpetuated the myth that the interests of Big Labor’s bosses and of American workers are identical. Employers will ‘step up’ when Obama stops stepping on them

President Barack Obama asserted last week that it’s time for companies to “step up” and increase hiring. Specifically he said “the issue here is not uncertainty. The issue is they’ve got to start placing their bets on America” and that “it’s time for companies to step up.” Read More

Two more years for FBI Director Robert Mueller

Filling top jobs in Washington is never easy in good times. The disruption, the disclosure and the grueling vetting process dissuade many well-qualified people from putting their names forward. In highly partisan times, it’s even worse. The opposition party will block a president’s choice, sometimes out of conviction, just as often out of simple orneriness. Read More

Want a federal contract? Be nice to Obama

President Barack Obama neatly summed up his political philosophy last year when he advised Latinos to “punish our enemies” and  “reward our friends” on immigration issues. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., took a brave stand against that philosophy this week, announcing his opposition to a draft presidential executive order that would require any company seeking a government contract to disclose all federal political contributions by the firm’s owners, directors and managers.
