All things must come to an end — including BART protests.The seventh consecutive planned demonstration called by the online hacker group Anonymous officially fizzled Monday when only three protesters came to the UN Plaza and Civic Center station.Barbara Bettenburg, 61, of San Francisco was one of the three. Dozens of protesters are occupying Tolman Hall on the UC Berkeley campus today, and there has been at least one confrontation with a university police officer involving pepper spray, according to police and protest organizers.
The protest began around noon today when hundreds of protesters gathered in Sproul Plaza to protest proposed statewide tuition hikes for the University of California system that could increase tuition by as much at 16 percent per year over four years. Read More
Two UC Berkeley graduates who have been detained in Iran on espionage charges for more than two years were finally released today, according to their families.Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, both 29, and a third UC Berkeley graduate, Sarah Shourd, were arrested on July 31, 2009, after embarking on a hike in Iraq’s Kurdistan region near the Iranian border.Iran accused all three of them of espionage and last month Bauer and Fattal were sentenced to eight years in prison. Former University of California at Berkeley golfer Diane Kwon, 21, was found dead in a Fremont parking lot late Monday night, and police said they are investigating the “suspicious” death.A passerby spotted the body of the two-time San Francisco City Championship winner in a parking lot behind 3950 Mowry Ave. — a location that formerly housed a Barnes and Noble bookstore — at about 11 p.m. on Labor Day, police said.
