It's a case of broken promises. A growing number of companies are reneging on health insurance and other retirement benefits, leaving retirees scrambling and sometimes uninsured.
In some cases the companies have few options. They cut benefits programs because they're in bankruptcy and must reduce costs to survive. In other cases, however, retirees have to fend for themselves even as corporate profits soar.

Consol Energy is alerting 500 workers at a coal mine in southwestern Pennsylvania after a miner died from a rare form of meningitis that is spread through a person's saliva.
The Pittsburgh-based company isn't identifying the worker who died Tuesday, a day after he went home with flulike symptoms.

Amparo Martinez's universe is two small, tidy rooms in a poor Quito neighborhood that she shares with her 83-year-old mother and a severely handicapped daughter.
Her predicament makes holding a job impossible, so the three depend on a $240-a-month government stipend introduced by President Rafael Correa under a program for the disabled.
Martinez adores Correa.

Apple briefly surpassed Exxon as the most valuable U.S. company after an excellent quarter, though the oil company has regained the lead at the market's close.
Apple's stock rose as much as 8 percent, while Exxon's fell as much as 2 percent during trading Wednesday.
Exxon Mobil Corp.'s stock closed up 4 cents at $87.22 for a market capitalization of $418 billion. Apple's increased 6 percent to $446.66 for a market cap of about $415 billion.
