Evictions from San Francisco homes have increased to levels not seen since the early 2000s, while the cost to rent continues to climb.
There were 1,757 eviction notices filed with the San Francisco Rent Board from March 1, 2012, to Feb. 28, 2013, a 12-year high. The prior year, there were 1,395 notices recorded. The Rent Board tallies figures from March 1 to Feb. 28, unlike the regular fiscal year that runs from July 1 to June 30.

Rent costs are on the rise in San Francisco and San Mateo County due to a sluggish homeownership market and housing demand from tech industry workers opting to rent instead of buy, according to new data compiled by Novato-based RealFacts.
Compared to second-quarter data from 2010, rents rose 8.6 percent in San Francisco and 9.3 percent in San Mateo County, for monthly averages of $2,400 and $1,800 respectively.

A spat over rent led to stabbing Saturday, police said.
The roommates say they are friends, but their argument over the apartment bills became violent in the 400 block of Eddy Street around 11:50 p.m., police said.
A 40-year-old white man stabbed his 67-year-old roommate in the hand before fleeing, police said. As of Monday, the attacker has not been arrested, police said.
The victim suffered a minor laceration, police said.
