As acting governor, Gavin Newsom advised to sit tight

gavin newsom
Writing and promoting a book was just the latest diversion that has kept our erstwhile Mayor Gavin Newsom from his current day job. And now that he’s ostensibly sitting on the big chair while Gov. Jerry Brown ambles through China, government-watchers have a bit of advice for Newsom: Keep it up. “The best thing he can do as acting governor is nothing,” Claremont McKenna College political scientist Jack Pitney told The Associated Press. An anonymous tipster is set to receive a $250,000 reward for his help in solving a seven-year-old homicide. Two years later, then-Mayor Gavin Newsom announced a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Allen’s killer. Read More

Lee, Newsom excited for 49ers’ Super Bowl appearance, but not for move from San Francisco

Ed Lee, Gavin Newsom
While the 49ers’ Super Bowl run has caused joy for residents and San Francisco city officials, the current mayor and his predecessor on Wednesday both expressed tempered excitement about the team’s impending move to the South Bay. UCSF marks 10 years of helping to transform Mission Bay

Ten years ago, when the first building at the UC San Francisco Medical Center in Mission Bay opened, the area was largely undeveloped. Now the neighborhood has become a hub for biotech science. Al-Jazeera set to keep San Francisco presence after Current TV purchase

With its $500 million purchase of left-leaning Current TV, the pan-Arab news channel Al-Jazeera will soon be seen in tens of millions of U.S. homes. It’s a steep price, but the acquisition helps the network in its aim to quickly spread its message to more Americans. The purchase will create a news channel called Al-Jazeera America, coming to U.S. homes 90 days from now with a distinctly non-American view of the world. Read More

Despite years of talk, San Francisco still mulling ban on plastic water bottles

As a small Massachusetts town became the first U.S. community to ban the sale of single-serving plastic water bottles Tuesday, even eliminating such packaging from large events continues to elude San Francisco despite years of discussion. While The City hasn’t been shy about taking on plastic bags or plastic foam food containers, water bottles have thus far managed to avoid its ever-growing ban list. Read More

Board of Supervisors president: a hall monitor for City Hall

When I was in high school, both of my older brothers played soccer. To kill time after school while they practiced, I became the “soccer manager.” This was a strange title, because I didn’t “manage” anything or anyone. All I did was fill Gatorade bottles and make sure the equipment was on the bus. This experience reminds me of the presidency of the Board of Supervisors. Because being the president of the board comes with about as much authority as being the soccer manager. Read More

The charismatic and outspoken London Breed, 38, is bringing passion and a breadth of experience from a tough childhood in the Western Addition to City Hall, where she wants to connect residents to meaningful jobs at flashy tech companies and reform public housing policies.   In November, Breed decisively won the District 5 race and will represent the Fillmore and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods on the Board of Supervisors when she is sworn in to office Jan. 8.
