Young people in San Mateo County can get around at a huge discount this summer with the SamTrans Summer Youth Pass. The $40 pass gives riders ages 17 and younger unlimited access to SamTrans bus service from June 1 through Aug. 31, according to SamTrans officials. SolarCity and Goldman Sachs create $500 million solar fund

San Mateo-based SolarCity Corp. announced Thursday that Goldman Sachs Group Inc. would finance more than $500 million of its solar power projects. The funding for U.S. residential solar leases is the largest such deal ever announced, SolarCity said in a statement. The agreement was initiated last year and the funding expanded in April. SolarCity has raised similar funds from banks such as U.S. Bancorp and from corporations including Google Inc. and Honda Motor Co Ltd. Read More

Robert Joseph Simmons, 33, believes he doesn’t need a medical card to possess marijuana because buds are a “core tenet” of his religion. At least, that was the Belmont resident’s claim after he was busted in April 2011 with more than 2½ pounds of pot and 13 pills of hydromorphine, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. S.F., other Bay Area counties among fastest growing in California

Three Bay Area counties had the fastest-growing populations in California over the past year, according to new data from the state. San Francisco, San Mateo and Alameda counties all had growth rates of more than 1 percent between January 2012 and the beginning of this year, according to Department of Finance figures released Wednesday. Statewide, the population grew by nearly 300,000 to 37.97 million, which was a 0.8 percent jump. Read More

A sleazy sibling who used her twin sister’s identity to score a job caring for an elderly Belmont couple ended up robbing the seniors, according to prosecutors. Home burglary suspect flees in Peninsula thefts

San Mateo and Hillsborough police located and then lost a burglary suspect who was interrupted at one San Mateo home Friday and might have cased other homes in Hillsborough, according to police. San Mateo police were called to a home in the 600 block of Edgewood Road about 12:20 p.m. for a reported interrupted burglary. Read More
