Start has San Mateo girls' basketball raising expectations

The San Mateo girls’ basketball team is off to its best start under fourth-year coach Nancy Dinges and is extremely confident heading into Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division play, which began Tuesday. The Bearcats (10-3) racked up quality wins against Sacred Heart Prep and Menlo and won the Dons Club Holiday Tournament at Del Mar High School during nonleague play. Three-alarm San Mateo fire extinguished

A three-alarm fire at an office building in downtown San Mateo was quickly extinguished this afternoon. Firefighters were called at 3 p.m. to at 400 South El Camino Real to fight the blaze, according to a San Mateo County fire dispatcher. Fire officials said the fire, which occurred on the 11th floor, was believed to have been started by a printer, according to news reports. No injuries were reported and damage was minimal. Read More

San Mateo man shot on Christmas morning

A San Mateo man was shot while standing in the street on Christmas morning, police said. The 20-year-old resident was in the 1700 block of Eisenhower Street in San Mateo around 12:20 a.m. when he was shot, cops said. He was transported to the hospital for his injuries, which were not life threatening. As of Wednesday no arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing, San Mateo police Sgt. Dave Norris said. Alleged armed robber bails out of custody — and court hearing

A Sacramento man who posted bail earlier this month after being arrested on suspicion of an armed robbery spree in San Mateo has now apparently bailed on a court hearing.Delaudea Deshaun Else, 19, posted a $150,000 bond Dec. 14. But on Friday, he failed to show up in San Mateo County Superior Court for a preliminary hearing, county prosecutors said. Read More

San Mateo seeks safer routes for pedestrians

More than 400 San Mateo pedestrians were hit by cars during the last decade and nine were killed, a rate that exceeds the county average. Now a group of residents and city officials hopes a new pedestrian master plan will cut that rate in half. An early version of the plan, which has been in the works for the past year and is being drafted to make San Mateo’s streets safer and more inviting for pedestrians, is expected to head to the San Mateo City Council in April. Drunken San Mateo fire station crash suspect in court

The Oakland woman accused of a crashing her car into a San Mateo fire station while drunk last summer, injuring her 17-year-old daughter, was set to return to court Tuesday. Lasheena Cardona is scheduled to appear at a pretrial conference on charges stemming from the July 11 crash in which her blood alcohol level tested at .31 percent, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. Her blood sample was taken 90 minutes after the car crash, Wagstaffe said. Read More

Man faces year in jail for fatal Pacifica hit-run

The man who fled a fatal Pacifica car accident — returning only after his insurance company advised him to — faces up to a year in county jail when sentenced Jan. 25.
