A jury will now make that call in the case of embattled Army veteran Ashley Viola, who allegedly whipped out a gun in downtown San Mateo last year — causing quite a scare — in defense of a woman.
On Monday, a San Mateo County judge scheduled a trial date of Oct. 15 for the 24-year-old. Prosecutors say Viola went from good Samaritan to crazed gunman when he confronted a man who rudely bumped into a woman on the sidewalk.

This fired-up tenant was apparently not bluffing on Friday when he allegedly threatened to burn down his landlord’s home.
Just before 11 p.m., the landlord of a home in the 400 block of Alameda Avenue in Half Moon Bay called San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies, saying a tenant was sending him threatening text messages. Lars Ehlers, 50, allegedly threatened to burn down the landlord’s home after being told he was being evicted, deputies said.

In a case of road rage eerily reminiscent of urban legend, a man was threatened at gunpoint early Sunday morning in San Mateo for flashing his high beams at the armed driver, police said.
The victim was on state Highway 92 about 12:05 a.m. when he was passed by a newer-model black Mercedes sedan with its high beams on, police said. The victim reportedly flashed his high beams when the Mercedes passed, then exited the freeway at Alameda De Las Pulgas.

These gun-toting robbers weren’t playing games.Authorities are investigating the second armed robbery at a San Carlos video game store in less than six months. San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the GameStop at 1135 Industrial Road about 8:20 p.m. on Monday.The clerk reported that three greedy thugs entered the business, brandished a gun and demanded cash. They fled and hadn’t been found as of Tuesday, deputies said.
