A man wearing a gas mask while driving Monday morning created an alarming scene in downtown San Mateo after officers reportedly found an inactive grenade inside his vehicle.
Just after 9 a.m. on East Fourth Avenue, police said, 29-year-old Gilberto Masias was stopped by officers who said they were alarmed by his apocalyptic-looking headgear. The gas mask might have been part of a Halloween costume, as police said Masias works at a local costume store.

San Mateo police arrested a San Francisco man they say attempted to abduct a 9-year-old girl from an elementary school Friday.

This fired-up tenant was apparently not bluffing on Friday when he allegedly threatened to burn down his landlord’s home.
Just before 11 p.m., the landlord of a home in the 400 block of Alameda Avenue in Half Moon Bay called San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies, saying a tenant was sending him threatening text messages. Lars Ehlers, 50, allegedly threatened to burn down the landlord’s home after being told he was being evicted, deputies said.
