Mountain lion spotted in San Mateo Highlands

A mountain lion was spotted this morning in the Highlands neighborhood of unincorporated San Mateo County, emergency officials said today. The animal was seen at about 9:05 a.m. behind a home at 116 CSM Drive and appeared to be heading toward the Crystal Springs area. Residents are advised to not approach mountain lions, and to try to appear large and make noise if one is nearby. The cats are most active at dawn, dusk and night. Read More

CHP car strikes body presumed dead from multiple-vehicle collision

This morning, a California Highway Patrol car struck a presumed dead body that had been flung into northbound highway traffic in San Mateo from a collision reported minutes earlier, a CHP spokesman said. The deceased and another person had apparently been standing on southbound U.S. Highway 101 around Poplar Avenue at about 2:55 a.m. when a black limousine hit them, CHP spokesman Art Montiel said. Windsurfing trip turns into waterlogged nightmare

Andre Volant intended to celebrate Labor Day with a quick windsurfing jaunt, but instead he ended up swimming for his life as darkness fell on San Francisco Bay. The 70-year-old San Bruno resident’s day took a turn for the worse when his carbon-fiber mast snapped and he spent most of the next five hours swimming with his board from Coyote Point to just past the San Mateo Bridge.
