Faced with a $29 million deficit for the upcoming fiscal year, the Golden Gate Bridge district is considering toll increases on the span.
In the midst of a significant financial crisis in 2009, the bridge district approved a long-term plan that called for toll hikes on the span every five years. All-electronic tolling on the Golden Gate Bridge began Wednesday, but some drivers may have been a little too eager to take advantage of the lack of congestion.
Some drivers were clocked at speeds of 60 mph going through the now-vacant toll plaza, according to the California Highway Patrol.
That’s more than double the posted 25 mph limit through the toll booths, which are narrow.

With cash payments soon to be a thing of the past, motorists will be able to more quickly zip through the toll plaza at the Golden Gate Bridge.
All-electronic tolling is scheduled to begin Wednesday, which will make the bridge the only span in California to feature such technology. As a result, the bridge transit district is poised to rework the posted speed limits for southbound motorists passing through the plaza.
