Sheriff owes SF more than few days’ pay

No, it is not significant that Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi announced Tuesday that he would not accept a taxpayer-provided paycheck on the days he does not work because he is sitting in court on trial for domestic abuse. This is just about the absolute minimum he could offer in the wake of criminal charges against one of the county’s highest-ranking public safety officials. Read More

Officials must solidify high-speed rail plan

The Sunday San Francisco Examiner op-ed promoting California’s high-speed rail project claimed that the voters approved the project and a solid plan was put forth. These statements are not quite accurate. The plan that the voters approved was far different than what is on the table today. Read More

San Francisco 49ers fever swept The City the week before today’s NFC Championship Game against the New York Giants. Other stadiums are fighting fan violence

With respect to the reported fan violence and vulgar language directed at fans wearing New Orleans Saints garb last weekend, I can tell you that the San Diego Chargers have put a “no tolerance” security policy in place for home games that includes both very visible yellow-jacketed security personnel along with uniformed police officers in between every pair of seat sections, and it has virtually shut down these idiotic incidents. A lot of 49ers fans witnessed a moment of miracle Saturday as the last 97 seconds sealed a victory against the New Orleans Saints. I know that up until that game, many San Franciscans did not believe the 49ers could go all the way. But the stoic performance they put up should have proven a point. Read More

UN must condemn Iran’s nuclear efforts

How much longer must the world wait for the United Nations to take serious action against Iran’s nuclear weapons program? Of course the leaders of that rogue nation tell us that their nuclear endeavors are strictly for energy production, but all of us, including the U.N. Security Council, are sure that weapons of mass destruction are their goal. Read More

City doing just fine without World Cup

San Francisco Planning Commissioner Michael Antonini’s statement about the America’s Cup, and that he “can’t think of another event, truthfully, since the ’39 World’s Fair that will be worldwide recognition for The City” is woefully shallow. With or without the 2013 America’s Cup yacht race, San Francisco’s worldwide recognition is already solidly established. Read More
