Groups seek solutions as pedestrian incidents increase on Van Ness

Despite the recent introduction of double fines for traffic citations — a deterrent that has proven effective elsewhere — pedestrian accidents on Van Ness Avenue have skyrocketed in the past two years, increasing the calls for more traffic-calming measures there.In 2008, there were nine such incidents on Van Ness, which doubles as U.S. Highway 101 in San Francisco. Car fire clogs portion of Market Street during rush hour

A car fire near the intersection of 6th and Market streets has a portion of The City’s main thoroughfare blocked during Monday’s evening rush hour.The white SUV is parked in the right-hand lane of Market Street heading west with white smoke steaming out of its engine. San Francisco Fire Department officials have confirmed a vehicle was on fire at the intersection around 5:15 p.m., but did not know if there were injuries involved in the incident. Read More

Crooks snatch man’s laptop, give ominous warning

A 36-year-old man was robbed of his laptop and checkbook Wednesday, cops said. The man was walking in the 900 block of Market Street at 6 a.m. when two black men in their mid-20s approached and attacked him, police said. One of the suspects punched the victim in the nose while the other ripped the victim’s computer bag off his shoulder, police said. One of the brutes pulled out a handgun and said to the victim, “Don’t follow us.” Read More
