WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has seized $21 million from troubled automaker Fisker Automotive Inc. just weeks after the company laid off three-fourths of its workers amid continuing financial and production problems. Parks get grant to go electric

The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded the Golden Gate National Recreation Area $229,550 for five new electric vehicles and chargers and an upgrade to its heavy duty maintenance equipment to run on a biodiesel blend. The grant will replace five of the park’s sedans with electric vehicles and the five chargers will be installed at Fort Mason to start. Read More

Department of Energy sends stimulus cash down tube

The U.S. Department of Energy gave West Virginia $38 million in stimulus money for home weatherization projects. Out of that, the state paid a lawyer $25,000 to write two sentences verifying that weatherization contracts had been reviewed, reportedly after only four hours of work. That is $6,250 an hour. Such waste and abuse helps explain why half of the state’s weatherized homes reinspected by DOE between September 2009 and August 2010 needed to be redone because of faulty work. Read More

Bid to require water-efficient clothes washers revived

A federal appeals court in San Francisco gave the California Energy Commission another chance today to establish a statewide rule requiring water-saving clothes-washing machines. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a decision in which the U.S. Department of Energy in 2006 refused to allow California to establish its own water efficiency standards for residential clothes washers.
