The California Supreme Court justices stepped down from their dais during a special visit to the University of San Francisco campus Tuesday to educate the public about their branch of government.

California’s new online voter registration process added more than 614,000 registered voters to today’s state electorate — almost half of them registered as Democrats. But beyond the presidential race, experts say, party officials shouldn’t count on support from such first-time voters.
Younger people and first-time voters tend to vote more independently and less along party lines than other voters, noted Corey Cook, an associate professor of politics at the University of San Francisco. New voters also tend to vote for the president and then leave many other items blank on their ballots.

Students at the University of San Francisco may not need to worry that their Panhandle campus is as dangerous as reports have made it out to be, according to a new study looking at criminal data.
Earlier this summer, the news website The Daily Beast ranked USF as the third most dangerous campus in the country, citing the number of criminal offenses at the school from 2008-10 based on data submitted to the U.S. Department of Education, as is required by federal law. Read More
A crowd of 5,000 watched Saturday as Nobel Peace Laureate and Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi received an honorary doctorate from the University of San Francisco.
Suu Kyi spoke to the crowd in English for several minutes before switching to Burmese, addressing her fellow countrymen in the audience. The Bay Area is home to the nation’s largest Burmese community. Read More
The University of San Francisco has a new place to call home.
The 150-year-old, 9,600-student campus located in the North of Panhandle neighborhood has expanded to 101 Howard St., a historic building in the South of Market.
An estimated 350 students started attending the downtown campus Aug. 21, the start of the fall semester. On Friday, though, USF officials will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of the campus. Read More
