With 12.8 million passengers annually, the N-Judah is the transit agency’s busiest light-rail line, but it frequently gets bogged down in automobile traffic while making the long journey between downtown and Ocean Beach in the Sunset district. Muni sees huge increases in fare-evasion citations under new deployment strategy

A new strategy to deter fare scofflaws is paying huge dividends for Muni, with the transit agency reporting a 79 percent increase in citations since the policy was unveiled in November. Under the direction of new security chief Lea Militello, who arrived in November, Muni has issued 37,718 fare-evasion citations over the past nine months, a major jump from the 21,061 tickets handed out over the same time period in the year prior. Planned work on N-Judah line washed out by rainy forecast

Rail replacement work on Muni’s N-Judah line will not happen this weekend as planned, due to the rainy forecast.The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which operates Muni, intended to close down portions of Church and Duboce streets as well as Carl Street for the rail rehabilitation project, which will replace infrastructure that is more than 30 years old. Traveling on Muni’s light-rail lines is never exactly smooth, but it’s particularly bumpy on the N-Judah. The line, which carries passengers from Ocean Beach to the Caltrain station on Fourth and King streets, was involved in 84 collisions between 2008 and 2011, making it far more accident-prone than the five other Muni train lines.
