Defense asks ElBaradei to testify in Mubarak trial

A lawyer for Egypt's former interior minister asked the court on Saturday to have Nobel Peace Prize laureate and pro-reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei testify as a witness in his client's defense. Mohammed el-Gendi, an attorney for Habib el-Adly, said ElBaradei could testify that security forces from the Interior Ministry protected him and ensured he arrived home safely during the most violent day of the uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak. Contractor charged with wage theft, other charges

A painting contractor who had a number of contracts to work on San Francisco city and school projects is facing charges that she cheated her employees out of more than $600,000 in wages. Frances Ann Doherty was charged Friday with 57 counts including wage theft, workers' compensation insurance premium fraud and other charges, said San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon. 'Silverware Bandit' sentenced to 210 years to life

Los Angeles County prosecutors say the so-called "Silverware Bandit" has been sentenced to 210 years to life in state prison for a string of break-ins at homes in west LA and Santa Monica. Deputy District Attorney Belle Chen says Jeffery Langford was called the "Silverware Bandit" because he targeted seven elderly women who lived alone and demanded their money, jewelry or silver. A Nevada state psychiatrist testified Friday that, despite two strokes, the embattled former physician-owner of Las Vegas outpatient clinics at the center of a 2008 hepatitis outbreak is mentally competent to stand trial on criminal charges. The former Penn State assistant football coach charged with child molestation asked for court permission Friday to see his grandchildren, visits currently prohibited under his bail conditions. A motion filed in Centre County court seeks to allow Jerry Sandusky to contact his 11 grandchildren by email, phone, text and Skype, and to let them visit his central Pennsylvania home if accompanied by a parent. Hawaiian singer sentenced in molestation case

Los Angeles County prosecutors say a popular Hawaiian singer has been given a six-year suspended state prison sentence after pleading no contest to sexually molesting two young sisters. A district attorney spokeswoman says 67-year-old Cecilio Rodriguez of the singing group Cecilio and Kapono was a friend of the girls' parents and stayed at their home during various tours in the 1990s.
