Mayor Ed Lee seeks San Francisco sales tax hike as California's rate falls

San Francisco shoppers are in store for some wallet relief when the sales tax drops by 1 percent Friday, but the full discount might be short-lived. One percent of the state sales tax is set to expire today after Gov. Jerry Brown and other Democrats abandoned hope of persuading Republican lawmakers to allow a vote on extending the tax.  The move lowers San Francisco’s sales tax from the current 9.5 percent to 8.5 percent. Texas day care owner seen shopping as fatal fire began

WHAT: Surveillance video released Tuesday showed Jessica Tata, 22, shopping at a nearby Target store when a fire killed four children she was supposed to be watching alone at a Houston home day care center she ran. HOW IT HAPPENED: Neighbors said Tata told them the fire started on a stovetop burner while she was in the bathroom. She was also seen driving up to the home and screaming as smoke poured out the front door. Read More

Woman throws young granddaughter to her death

A Virginia toddler was walking out of a shopping mall with relatives when her grandmother suddenly flung her over a railing, sending the girl on a fatal plunge to the pavement several stories below, police said. Carmela Dela Rosa, 50, of Fairfax was arrested and charged with murder, a prosecutor said. Authorities said interviews with witnesses and Dela Rosa led them to the conclusion that the girl’s fall was no accident, but they couldn’t yet explain why the grandmother threw her. Read More
