Rose Bowl to mark 100th game in January

The Rose Bowl will celebrate its 100th game on New Year's Day in 2014 as college football's oldest bowl. To mark the occasion, the game trophy has been modified by Tiffany to add 24-karat yellow gold vermeil accents to the 21-inch tall design that includes a three-quarter size sterling silver football. It was unveiled Tuesday at the iconic stadium, where the logo for the 2014 BCS national championship game was already on the field. Read More

Florer throws second no-hitter in LMU history

Matt Florer threw the second no-hitter in Loyola Marymount history Tuesday night in a 5-0 victory over Cal State Northridge. Florer (2-1), a senior left-hander, struck out a career-best five, walked five and hit a batter in the Lions' first no-hitter since Bob Seus tossed one against Long Beach State in 1980. Florer, from Mission Viejo, Calif., threw 134 pitches in his ninth career start and 14th appearance this season for Loyola Marymount (21-19). Read More

ACC's TV rights deal should slow realignment

Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford hopes the decision by his members to hand over their television rights to the league helps bring stability to all of college athletics after three years of conference realignment chaos. The ACC announced Monday its 15 current and future members agreed to a grant of rights, a legally binding deal that runs through 2027 and makes it nearly impossible for a school to switch conferences. Andre Young had 19 points off three 3-pointers to lift Clemson to its second straight win in a 71-60 victory over Wake Forest on Saturday. Devin Booker scored 16 points and Tanner Smith added 13 for the Tigers (11-9, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference), who shook off an awful start to send Wake Forest to its fifth loss in five games. Darius Miller came off the bench to score 19 points and Kentucky cruised in its first game since returning to No. 1 in the rankings, beating Georgia 57-44 on Tuesday night. Fired Penn State coach Joe Paterno dead at 85

Joe Paterno, who racked up more wins than anyone else in major college football but was fired from Penn State amid a child sex abuse scandal has died. He was 85. His family released a statement Sunday morning to announce his death. Paterno's son Scott announced Nov. 18 that his father was being treated for lung cancer, which was diagnosed in mid-November during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness. Read More

Zane Johnson scored 18 of his season-high 29 points in the first half as Hawaii defeated New Mexico State 91-87 on Saturday night. Johnson, a senior, shot 7 of 13 from 3-point range and was 10 of 17 from the field to help the Rainbow Warriors (11-8, 3-2 WAC) snap a two-game losing streak. Colt Ryan scored 20 points and Evansville turned two big first-half runs into a 79-71 victory over Illinois State on Saturday night. The Purple Aces (10-9, 5-4 Missouri Valley) had runs of 15-2 and 15-5 to go on top 42-27 at halftime, and increased the lead to 23 points early in the second half. Read More
