Bonds, Clemens denied; no players elected to Baseball Hall of Fame

Steroid-tainted stars Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa were denied entry to baseball’s Hall of Fame, with voters failing to elect any candidates for only the second time in four decades. Bonds received just 36.2 percent of the vote, Clemens 37.6 and Sosa 12.5 in totals announced Wednesday by the Hall and the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. It could have been the greatest Hall of Fame class since Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb were installed in the very first vote back in 1936. It would have been if those eligible had allowed their natural ability to carry the day. Barry Bonds never needed steroids to be great. It was already in his genes, and the numbers he put up before he suddenly grew larger than life would have been enough to make him a first-ballot choice the moment he was eligible. Read More

Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa are set to show up on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time, and fans will soon find out whether drug allegations block the former stars from reaching baseball’s shrine. The ballot will be announced today. Craig Biggio, Mike Piazza and Curt Schilling are certain to be among the other first-time eligibles. JEFF KENT The former Giants second baseman will be part of the CBS reality TV series "Survivor: Philippines," which begins Sept. 19. Rumors of Kent’s inclusion on the show first surfaced in June, but were made a reality on Monday when the cast was officially announced. A jury on Monday acquitted Major League Baseball pitching great Roger Clemens of all six criminal charges against him in a trial to decide whether he lied to Congress about using performance-enhancing drugs.
