Redwood City tennis players hoping to reserve one of the city’s courts may soon have to fork over some cash.
The Park and Recreation commission will consider changes to the reservation process and prices because of the growing popularity of the city’s courts.
Redwood City does not currently charge a fee to use one of its dozen tennis courts.

Former Supervisor Ed Jew ’s attorney appeared in San Francisco Superior Court on Monday to work on a deal in Jew’s local case. Jew is slated to stand trial starting Nov. 10 on federal public-corruption charges, but he’ll have at least two more chances to work with prosecutors before the trial begins — Oct. 21 in Superior Court and Oct. 28 in federal court. A former Spanish teacher at a Pacifica high school was sentenced to five years in federal prison Friday for receiving child pornography.Carlos Araiza, 44, who taught at Terra Nova High School since 2000, pleaded guilty in June to one count of receiving child pornography in January 2005, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Five years imprisonment is the minimum mandatory sentence for the statute, officials said.

A man accused of killing a homeless man in Half Moon Bay last September was sentenced to 11 years in state prison this morning in San Mateo County Superior Court.
Brian David Ruckel, 39, a transient, had pleaded no contest to killing 47-year-old Karl Stevens at a homeless encampment where Stevens was living, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

A prosecutor told jurors today that a former Navy-enlisted man from Oakland "made a cold, calculated decision to kill" five young women in gruesome fashion in the East Bay over a four-month span in 1985.

A motorist who allegedly struck and killed a 4-year-old boy with his van in Oakland and then fled will be arraigned today on felony hit-and-run charges, Alameda County Assistant District Attorney Norbert Chu said.
Chu said he also charged the suspect, 27-year-old Juan Magana, with a misdemeanor charge of being an unlicensed driver and a misdemeanor charge of filing a false police report.

Computer engineer Hans Reiser told authorities he killed his estranged wife Nina on Sept. 3, 2006, by hitting her in the face and strangling her with a judo hold while their children played computer games one floor below, prosecutor Paul Hora and defense lawyer William DuBois said today.
Hora and DuBois revealed the details of how Reiser, 44, killed Nina for the first time after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in his case and was sentenced to 15 years to life.

Bernie Ward, the popular radio talk-show host disgraced by federal child-pornography charges, was sentenced Thursday to seven years and two months in prison.
Ward, who is married and has four children, was fired in December 2007 from KGO-AM in San Francisco after a grand jury indictment accused him of actively uploading and sharing images of child pornography on the Internet. His KGO-AM shows included the Sunday morning “God Talk” program.
