'Anna Karenina’ lavish but stilted film

“Anna Karenina” is back, regardless of whether we need another adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s tragic story of love, longing, locomotives and, when things work well, some pithy social material in between. Director Joe Wright gives it an original go, but his stylized, design-heavy approach undercuts essential passion. Read More

Pretension rules ‘360’

360
The movie “360” is presented as something brimming with profound observations about alienation and interconnectedness, but it really is a hollow collection of coincidences interspersed with platitudes about This Modern Life. It starts with a prostitute, Mirka (Lucia Siposová), whom we meet as she is posing for pictures on an escorting website. Read More

Scoop: Celeb New Year’s resolutions for ’10

Getty Images
Britney Spears As far as we’re concerned, Brit’s 2010 resolution should be to just keep up the good work! If the pop princess continues toeing the line — and racking up hits — like she did in ’09, the world will forget all about that long-ago nasty business with the “ychiatric-psay ard-way.” Oh, and one more suggestion: Wear a bra every day. Please. Read More
