San Francisco closer to hosting far-flung Super Bowl

The National Football League has chosen San Francisco as one of two finalists to host the 2016 or 2017 Super Bowl — although the game would be played 50 miles south of The City at the 49ers’ new home in Santa Clara. 49er's Hall of Famer R.C 'Alley Oop' Owens dies at age 78

R.C. Owens, a former 49ers wide receiver who was inducted into the franchise’s Hall of Fame last year, passed away Sunday at the age of 78, the team announced Monday. Nicknamed “Alley Oop” for his leaping ability, Owens played five of his eight NFL seasons for San Francisco and spent more than two decades in the team’s front office. Owens was with the 49ers from 1957-61 and then went on to play for the Baltimore Colts (1962-63) and New York Giants (1964). Read More

Instead of looking for an executive from a winning team to become the 49ers’ general manager, Jed York is apparently looking inward in his wretched organization to promote Trent Baalke. Well, I guess we shouldn’t expect anything different. Jed, after all, is the son of John York, who told me in our first conversation that he was going to tell Steve Mariucci how to coach his assistant coaches and then proceeded to tell Bill Walsh how to run an organization.
