Tahoe-bound road warriors: Bring chains, don snow tires

Trending Articles

Travelers seeking holiday thrills during the long weekend should do so with caution.

Snow levels in the Lake Tahoe area through the weekend are expected at 2,500 feet. Lake Tahoe reported three feet of snow Thursday and should expect another 2-4 feet today with chances of precipitation through Saturday. National Weather Service Forecaster Steve Anderson said Tahoe may see a break in snowfall on Sunday, but a storm projected to strike Monday will likely resume snowfall.

With the continued snow, Caltrans is requiring chains or snow traction tires for vehicles trekking to Tahoe. Those seeking snow thrills up Interstate 5 will also be required to use chains and traction tires through areas in Siskiyou and Shasta counties.

Forecasters predict San Francisco showers through Saturday. Locals may also see a break in rain Sunday, but a second storm predicted for Monday night and Tuesday morning will likely resume the downpour, Anderson said.
