Swimmer bitten by seal or sea lion in San Francisco Bay

A swimmer was apparently bitten by a seal or sea lion in the San Francisco Bay on Thursday afternoon.

The Police Department’s marine unit found the swimmer in the Bay waters shortly after 2 p.m., who told police they were bitten in the arm by a sea lion or seal, San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Jonathan Baxter said.

The swimmer suffered “a severe extremity injury” and emergency personnel took the victim to Pier 45, Baxter said.

Emergency officials immediately began bleeding control measures and ultimately applied a tourniquet to the swimmer.

The swimmer was taken to the local trauma center and their “vital signs were stable,” Baxter said.

Sea lions and seals are not typically known to bite swimmers in the Bay.

“This is not a usual occurrence,” Baxter said.

This is a breaking story. Check back for updates.
