Strong winds deny surfers

Surfers decided Monday afternoon to not hold the elite Mavericks Surf Contest this week, saying the winds were too powerful and dangerous.

Of the 24 surfers, 16 voted against holding the contest and four voted in favor. Four surfers were absent for the vote.

The National Weather Service issued a surf advisory for this morning through Thursday, alerting surfers that there would be huge waves peaking at 20 feet, and maybe higher. Those are perfect waves for the Mavericks competition, but it’s the strong winds that are making the conditions unsafe for the contest, said Katherine Clark, co-director of the competition.

“The winds are going in the absolute worst direction,” Clark said. “It makes it dangerous and not fun.”

Clark said the next vote could be held Saturday, with the contest potentially Monday.
