Steve Kerr on if he wants to coach LeBron: ‘Are you really going to ask that?’

OAKLAND — NBA Twitter was set on fire late Wednesday night when ESPN reported that LeBron James would consider taking a meeting with the Golden State Warriors if they cleared enough cap space this offseason.

Likelihood of that scenario playing out aside, Steve Kerr wasn’t interested in answering questions about whether he’d like to coach James. Mostly because he doesn’t want to be fined by the league for tampering.

“Are you really going to ask that?” he said when asked after practice on Thursday. “Do you want me to get my checkbook out and just make it out to Adam Silver or to the NBA? You know that’s illegal [to talk about players on other teams]? I’m not answering that.”

General manager Bob Myers got out ahead of any questions about James by explaining the tampering rules to the assembled media.

“I can’t talk about other players on other teams. I’m not allowed to, I wouldn’t do it anyways,” he said.

LeBron-to-the-Warriors is the perfect story for the NBA to steal some spotlight from the NFL in the lead up to the Super Bowl, but that doesn’t mean the Dubs’ braintrust is going to give up any of their hard-earned cash to publicly entertain the idea.
