WHAT: Japan’s biggest defense contractor, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, acknowledged that hackers had broken into dozens of its computers. The cyberattack apparently targeted Mitsubishi’s submarine, missile and nuclear power plant component factories.
HOW BAD: About 80 Mitsubishi computers were taken over. At least eight different virus types were found, including a Trojan horse, which steals key information from infected computer hardware.
WHY: The Japanese make large conventional submarines that are among the world’s most sophisticated. The integrated mechanical, electronic and control systems would make hacking its design a tempting goal.
