Freddy Sanchez has been slow to heal from his myriad injuries.

Issue: Freddy Sanchez and Opening Day.

Analysis: In short, don’t hold your breath.

And if that surprises you, you haven’t been paying very close attention. Not only has Sanchez been slow to heal from his myriad injuries since climbing aboard the Good Ship Orange and Black, but it’s March 15 and he hasn’t yet played defense in a Cactus League game.

He debuted as a DH on Friday, and when I spoke to him he insisted that his workouts are going well, that his shoulder is coming along just fine, etc., etc.

But in contrast to his vibe in recent years, he wasn’t overly optimistic. He was measured. Cautious. Careful to manage expectations.

That has not been Sanchez in the past. He’s always been the guy to paint a pretty picture. To smile through interviews and insist he’s right on track — ahead of schedule, even.

That he’s taking a different tack now speaks volumes, and here’s what it says: Ryan Theriot was a very good signing.

Theriot isn’t going to knock anyone’s socks off. He’s Freddy Light. Not as much range, not as dynamic athletically, not as much pop, not as pure of a hitter.

But he is a solid backup. A guy who won’t kill you if he has to fill in for a few weeks or so. A good teammate. A smart, fundamentally sound player.

Here’s what else he is: The Giants’ Opening Day starter at second base. If he’s not, be pleasantly surprised.

See you in May, Freddy.
