Veteran second baseman Freddy Sanchez has agreed to a one-year contract extension, the team announced Friday.

In his third season with the Giants, the 33-year-old hit .292 with 22 doubles, seven home runs and 47 RBIs in helping San Francisco win the World Series last year, his first full season with the team.

Various reports have put the monetary value of the deal at $6 million.

Sanchez is a standout defender, committing only four errors last year for a .991 fielding percentage, third-best among National League second basemen. San Diego’s David Eckstein (1.000) and Cincinnati’s Brandon Phillips (.996) put up the top two fielding percentages at the position in 2010.

The three-time All-Star hit .254 with four doubles and three RBI during the Giants’ postseason run.

He won the 2006 NL batting title with the Pittsburgh Pirates at .344 and is a career .298 hitter.
