Right-handed pitcher Brandon McCarthy was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder, the A’s announced Sunday.

The move is retroactive to May 18, the day after his last start.

The A’s replaced McCarthy on the roster by recalling right-hander Jim Miller.

McCarthy, who went on the DL for the seventh time in his career, has a 3-3 record with a 2.95 ERA in nine starts this season.

McCarthy made headlines during the May 17 start for his heated exchange with umpire Laz Diaz over a disputed double play call. Replays showed the umpire erred on the play, but McCarthy wrote in his personal blog that he regretted how he handled the disagreement.
Miller had a 0-2 record in Class AAA Sacramento with two saves and a 2.92 ERA in eight games.

Hot Melky: Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera tied his career high with four hits on Sunday. It’s the second time this season and the eighth time in his career Cabrera has a four-hit game. It was also his third straight multi-hit game and major league-best 20th of the season.

Streaking Pagan: Giants outfielder Angel Pagan extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double. He has hit safely in 31 of the past 32 games after having a 20-game hitting streak to open the season.

Manny dinged up: Manny Ramirez was held out of Sunday’s game at Triple-A Sacramento due to a sore wrist. He went 0-for-4 and struck out three times Saturday in his first game. Ramirez is scheduled to make his A’s debut May 30.
