Alan Gordon scored on a header in the 88th minute as the Earthquakes pulled out a tie with Chivas USA on Sunday at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The dramatic tie allowed the Quakes (7-2-2) to bounce back after last week’s stoppage-time loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps, which snapped a seven-match unbeaten streak. It also gave San Jose sole possession of second place in the MLS’ Western Conference, edging the Quakes one point ahead of Seattle.
Gordon was on the left side of the 6-yard box when rose up and converted rookie Sam Garza’s crossing pass and beat goalkeeper Dan Kennedy to the bottom-left corner.
Chivas (3-6-1) took control of the game quickly as Jose Correa — the 19-year-old phenom from Colombia — struck in the fourth minute for his first MLS goal.
The Quakes return to action Saturday when they host Columbus.
