While Alex Smith probably won't be playing for the 49ers next year, his next destination is still unknown.

It appears as if Alex Smith’s tenure in San Francisco could be over. But his new destination is still a mystery.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora tweeted Sunday night that the 49ers have told other teams inquiring that a deal for the quarterback is “effectively complete.”

The trade partner is not known, but NFL.com reported that the Kansas City Chiefs, who own the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft, seem most likely.

Any trade can’t be made official until the NFL’s new league season officially begins March 12.

Nothing is set in stone at this point, as both sides could still back out of the deal or it could be a smokescreen by the Niners to drum up more interest.

If Smith does team up with new coach Andy Reid, he would the latest in a line of former San Francisco quarterbacks to play in Kansas City. Joe Montana, Elvis Grbac, Steve Bono and Steve DeBerg have previously made the jump.

Smith led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game in 2011, but lost his job to Colin Kaepernick this season. Kaepernick was the catalyst for the 49ers during their run to Super Bowl XLVII, where they lost 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens.
