Hue Jackson has been fired after just one season coaching the Oakland Raiders, after the team struggled down the stretch to finish a disappointing 8-8, missing out on the playoffs for the ninth consecutive year.

The Raiders made the decision to part ties with Jackson on the same day that Reggie McKenzie is set to join the team as its new general manager, according to reports from ESPN.com.

Jackson led the team to a promising 7-4 start, but the team faded badly during the latter part of the year. During a season-ending loss to the Chargers at home, a game that could have sealed the AFC West for the Raiders, Jackson was highly critical of his players and demanded more control of the team’s operations.

A former offensive coordinator, Jackson also approved a controversial trade to acquire Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer after Jason Campbell was lost for the year to an injury. At the time of the trade, Oakland was 4-2, but Palmer struggled to lead the squad, throwing 16 interceptions over 10 games. Oakland sacrificed two high draft picks to acquire Palmer.

Jackson became the third Raiders’ coaching casualty in the last 2½ years. Lane Kiffin was fired midseason in 2008 after a highly publicized spat with owner Al Davis, and Tom Cable was let go last year.
