The Stanford women’s basketball team continued its quest for a fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament’s Final Four with a dominating 72-55 victory over West Virginia in a second-round game at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va.

The victory was the 30th in a row for the Cardinal (33-1), the top-seeded team in the Fresno Region. Stanford’s only loss came against Connecticut 68-58 on Nov. 21.

Stanford advances to the Sweet 16 to play fifth-seeded South Carolina on Saturday at the Save Mart Center in Fresno.

The Cardinal broke away from a close game early with a 17-0 run midway through the first half, turning a 16-12 lead into a 33-12 advantage with slightly more than six minutes left until halftime.

Eighth-seeded West Virginia never threatened after that, failing to get the deficit under 16 in the second half.

The Cardinal used a balanced offensive attack that saw four players score in double figures and a smothering defense that held West Virginia to just 31.1 percent shooting.

Amber Orrange, a 5-foot-7 freshman guard, led Stanford with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Nnemkadi Ogwumike added 16 points and sister Chiney Ogwumike chipped in 13 points.
