USF shortstop drafted by Reds in 28th round

SAN FRANCISCO — After turning in a stellar campaign for the USF baseball team, junior shortstop Derek Poppert was rewarded by being selected in the 28th round of the baseball draft by the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.
Poppert, an Acalanes High School product, hit .352 for the Dons this past season, while also tallying a team-high 52 RBIs and 16 steals.
The 6-foot-1 190-pounder was a first-team All-West Coast Conference selection.
Cal and Stanford had a busy second day of the draft, with a combined six players selected.
Stanford right-handed pitcher Brandt Walker was chosen by the Houston Astros in the eighth round, right-hander Jeffrey Inman was a 12th-round pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates, outfielder Joey August was selected by the New York Mets in the 20th round and outfielder Wande Olabisi was tabbed by the San Diego Padres in the 30th round.
Cal junior left-hander Michael Bugary was selected in the 15th round by the Boston Red Sox and senior infielder Michael Brady was taken in the 24th round by the Florida Marlins.
Meanwhile, Stanford’s Drew Storen, who was the 10th overall pick Tuesday, agreed to terms with the Washington Nationals and has was assigned to Class A Hagerstown. Storen threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Wednesday night’s game against the Reds.
Other players with local ties drafted Wednesday include: Santa Barbara’s Ryan Cavan (Menlo School), who went to the Giants in the 16th round, UC Davis’ Andy Suiter (Menlo School), who was drafted by the Dodgers in the 10th round, and Santa Clara’s Jon Karcich (Serra High), who was chosen by the Angels in the 7th round.
